Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our lives were always as perfectly put together as all of those Instagram perfect pictures we see? The reality is, life is messy, and life is busy and it so rarely goes 100% the way we planned…As a working Mom, this is my reality.
Recently, a Girlfriend asked me “what is your life schedule like?” and it got me thinking about how I balance the demands of a full-time job and managing a household, a husband and two little boys. The truth is, most of the time, I don’t balance the demands at all. The truth is, most of the time, I’m winging it, going with the flow and getting things done only because they need to be (grocery shopping, laundry, you name it!) I don’t know about you, but I would much rather hang out with my boys than do much of anything else.
So, just how does a working Mom stay on top of it all? In answering my Girlfriends’ question, I gave her my “ideal” life scenario and the reality of what life is really like, in a few key areas of our family life: meal planning/grocery shopping, laundry and finding the time to work out:
Meal planning/grocery shopping
Ideal: Meals are planned out for the week, grocery shopping is done in a timely fashion and dinner is executed nightly, without incident.
Reality: Meals are planned out for the week, but grocery shopping wasn’t done so Hubby has to run out for things and therefore everything changes and it’s complete chaos at dinnertime…
Ideal: A load of laundry is done every night, as planned, so as not to be overwhelmed by the endless amounts of it.
Reality: Laundry isn’t done for several nights and I end up spending another several nights catching up with the endless amounts of it.
Ideal: I wake up early, feeling refreshed (and before the boys are up), ready for a workout to start my day.
Reality: I wake up at 10pm, after having fallen asleep putting the boys to bed and drag my exhausted self downstairs for my workout.
It’s a neverending battle with life and our to-do lists…What is the secret formula to controlling the chaos? Is there such a thing? Between working full-time, juggling schedules, appointments and activities and spending quality family time together, it feels like we’re constantly on the go, go, go! I have to remind myself that the most important thing is family and being together. The mess will get cleaned up eventually – the dishes will get done, the toys will be put away and the dirty socks will find their way into the laundry hamper (yeah right!)…The truth? Our house will probably not get cleaned until we’re expecting company over.
The reality is, plans change, life happens…And sometimes it takes you 3 weeks to finally find the time to finish your blog post (like this one…oops!) Life can be messy…Just like my house at the moment, and that’s ok! One day at a time, right? The dishes and the laundry can wait…
Have a great day, Girlfriends!
